Trendy Plants Spotlight 2018: Bonsai, Orchids, and Zen
2018’s top trending plants are all about Zen.
These plants reflect how connecting with nature brings us peace and calm. So, tame your love for wild, unkempt plants and try something tranquil this year.
Out with the old, in with the new. Just kidding…we don’t advise that you toss out your favorite spider plant in favor of 2018’s popular plants, but there’s certainly no harm in adding new, stylish greenery to your home!
Pick your favorite trendy plant and give it a special spot—next to your bedside or on your living room coffee table.
Bonsai
The bonsai tree is making a comeback! These little beauties have a reputation for requiring time-intensive care. However, you’ll find that they’re not nearly as much work as you’d expect and that the act of caring for them is relaxing and rejuvenating.
Exact care requirements depend on the species you choose, its size, and the size of the planter. But there are some basic guidelines you should follow when caring for a bonsai tree:
- Never let the soil dry completely, but don’t water it when it’s damp. Instead water when the top half inch of soil is slightly dry.
- Bonsai trees have unique soil requirements, typically including pumice and lava rock.
- If water is flowing out of the planter when you water the tree, this means the roots are too compact, and it’s time for a bigger planter.
Orchids
Not only are orchids stunning, they’re also some of the longest-lasting blooms of any flower variety, making them a favorite for indoors. In keeping with the Zen theme of 2018, orchids bring a tranquil, peaceful style to the home.
The top tip for caring for orchids is to encourage humidity. Orchids don’t just need watering, they also need water in the air around them. You can provide this by placing a water-filled saucer beneath the plant, by misting the plant with a spray bottle, or placing the plant near a humidifier, if you use one.
Aquatic plants
Move over air plants. Aquatic plants are the new indoor gardening trend. This trend is so new, in fact, that it will require some creativity to get started, since water plants aren’t readily available at most garden retailers. You might be more likely to find water plants at your local aquarium supply or pet store than at your local nursery. Look for Amazon sword plants, marimo moss balls, or other types of algae.
Plan on replacing the water every week to keep the plant fresh. You can try using your tap water, but if it’s too harsh, you may need to purchase a jug of fresh water from your local grocery store.
Zen-style beauties
Looking for tranquil plants that don’t require quite as much effort? Money plants and bamboo are beautiful options that are incredibly easy to grow indoors. Put them in indirect sunlight, water when needed, and regularly clean the leaves to keep them free of mites.
To up the Zen factor of money plants and bamboo, use a planter with cool, tranquil blue tones or soft, muted greens.
After a few years of being obsessed with dry desert plants, it’s refreshing to see the trends turn towards plants that require humidity and (literally) lots of water. Are you going to rush out and try one of these new plant trends? Let us know your favorite in the comments below!
