Terracotta Towers: A Beautiful Display of Your House Number
Beautiful terracotta planters displayed on your front porch provide a feeling of warmth, and is a welcoming gesture to guests. Why not add a clever function to these planters by personalizing them? A great way to do this is by adding your house number and making it a one of a kind display!
This is truly a practical idea because most house numbers are hard to find, even when they are on display. These decorated terracotta planters provide functionality, beauty, and is a great way to say “Welcome to our home!”
Did you know you can actually make these yourself with great success? You don’t have to have a degree in art, just the willingness — and of course the materials. Just remember, the higher the quality of materials you use, the better, as these planters will be exposed to the elements.
The number of terracotta planters you’ll need will depend on how many numbers in your address, the size of those numbers, and the display you have in mind. You will want to use larger-sized numbers so that they can be seen from a distance.
We will share a very easy to make display, but it’s also beautiful and a lot of fun to make!
Materials Needed
- One large terracotta planter with saucer
- 2 medium terracotta planters
- 2 small terracotta planters
- White spray paint
- Various colors of spray paint
- Numeric stickers or stencils
- Potting soil
- Various plants
Step-By-Step Instructions
- Prime the base pot: cover the largest planter in a layer of white spray paint and allow it to thoroughly dry. If you prefer the traditional terracotta color, skip this step and leave as is. Just make sure the planter is clean before continuing.
- After the prime coat is completely dry, now it’s time to add the house numbers. Take the numeric stickers or stencils and make sure you place them firmly on. If there are any gaps, the paint will seep and you won’t be happy. So press firmly or secure with tape if needed before going to the next step.
- Now pick one of the various colors of spray paint you have chosen and paint the entire exterior of the pot. Be sure to protect the rest of the pot from getting sprayed by covering it with newspaper or plastic. Then let it dry.
- Once the paint is completely dry on the large terracotta planter, slowly peel the numeric stickers off, and there you go! The numbers are now beautifully embedded on your large planter.
- Now spray paint the other two smaller planters in coordinating colors.
Time to Plant the Plants in Your Display
- Put one of the medium-sized terracotta planters turned upside down into the large planter.
- Place potting soil around the inserted pot, leaving the top uncovered of soil.
- Plant a vine or any trailing plant in the soil around the large pot.
- Set the medium-sized painted pot on top of the inserted pot.
- Now place a small pot upside down inside the medium pot.
- Add soil and plant around the small pot.
- Last but not least, stack the smallest painted pot on top of the inserted pot.
- Fill with potting soil and add some gorgeous flowers to present your new beautiful terracotta tower featuring your house number.
