How Winter Indoor Plants Bring Joy and Promote Wellness
Having plants in your home is a rejuvenating experience year round, but especially during winter months, the benefits of indoor plants are tenfold.
When the leaves are off the trees, the days are shorter, and the skies are sometimes dreary, greenery inside can beautify the home while offering some pretty incredible psychological and physical benefits.
A much-needed dose of greenery and color
It’s well-known that minimalism and nature-inspired design trends are very in. Indoor house plants are both beautiful and refreshing.
With so many different styles to choose from, everyone can find an indoor container that’s perfect for their home. Fill containers with plants that are easy to care for, even in the winter, like spider plants or anthuriums, and you’ll have something that’s pretty to look at.
When everything’s gray and barren outside, your home can still be full of life.
Natural decor for the winter season
Before Christmas, on Christmas, after Christmas…a potted evergreen is a lovely addition to your home. You don’t even need to decorate it. Just having evergreen trees and shrubs indoors in the winter will bring fresh and festive scents that get you in the mood for the holidays.
If you do choose to put some cute ornaments on a potted tree, simply take them off after Christmas and enjoy keeping the plant indoors for the remainder of the season. Even if you prefer having a large Christmas tree that’s been cut down, having a small potted one (or several) can bring a lot of beauty and freshness to the home.
Decreased stress and increased focus
Everyone knows what it feels like to be exhausted in the winter. The shorter days make you feel like you have less time but more to do. Plus, the cold weather can make us want to hibernate, and hibernating isn’t very productive.
When people have plants in their homes and offices, they experience increased focus and productivity.
Plus, plants are natural stress relievers, so you’ll feel more rejuvenated and relaxed during a season that can lead to higher levels of stress and depression.
Cleaner air with less pollutants
It’s been long known that house plants purify the air, but the extent to which they can help and which plants are best at it is still being studied. We’re learning that houseplants are truly deserving of our time and attention, and that it’s important to make space for them inside the home and in offices and other work environments.
Luckily, most of the plants that are best at purifying the air are also easy to find and easy to care for. Rubber plants and palms are among the top options and are typically very affordable. Since rubber plants are also easy to transplant, you can take cuttings and grow your collection to help purify every room.
While indoor succulents are beautiful, they’re not the best air purifiers. So when selecting plants for this characteristic, choose plants that require moisture.
Quicker healing times
This benefit might come as a surprise. New research by the Journal of Environmental Psychology has found that houseplants not only purify the air and our minds, but our bodies as well.
Indoor plants contribute to quicker healing times. Considering the vast amount of colds and flus that go around at this time of the year, that’s welcome news.
The reality is that people aren’t designed to spend as much time indoors as we do. All sorts of conditions are made worse by stifling air. So having plants indoors—especially during the winter—helps us live healthier and happier. No surprise there!
