For Your Health: Five Unusual Spots for Plants in Your Home
Did you know that indoor plants have incredible benefits for your health and well-being? Plants not only make oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide, but they also filter out certain pollutants and toxins.
Recent studies have concluded that indoor plants do the following:
- Clear toxins
- Improve concentration
- Increase happiness
- Promote healing
- Improve memory
Many people spend 80-90% of their time indoors, so having plants placed in and around your environment will not only beautify your home, but will also improve your well-being. All of this is based on scientific evidence, which is a great reason to put some potted plants throughout your home, even in places you might not expect!
5 Unusual Places To Put Indoor Plants:
- On top of the toilet
- On a hand towel ring
- In the shower
- Next to the sink
- Around your computer
The reason most of these unusual places are in the bathroom or water areas is because many people have a heavy mold problem and don’t even know it. Mold comes from an unbalanced amount of moisture in the air, and can wreak havoc in your house and even make you sick!
Enter the peace lily, a gorgeous plant that will reduce the levels of mold spores in your house, according to NASA’s Clean Air study, which can improve the air quality by as much as 60%. The peace lily actually absorbs the mold through its leaves and circulates them to its roots, where it uses it as food. Place this on top of your toilet or in the shower.
Want a great plant next to your sink or on a hand towel ring? Consider the spider plant! This is another plant listed in NASA’s Clean Air study; this incredible plant can get 90% of cancer-causing formaldehyde out of the air.
Why not purchase or even make a trendy macrame plant hanger and hang it from the towel ring? You can also place the plant next to the sink, since this toxin is found in adhesives, grout, and household cleaning solutions.
While we don’t normally think of our computer area as a place for plants, it is actually a good location. Your computer emits radiation, and having a plant such as a cactus will help absorb these toxins. Another beautiful plant to consider that absorbs formaldehyde is a rubber tree plant (Ficus robusta). This would look great anywhere, but next to a window is a good choice to catch and absorb the toxins as they are coming in. The rubber tree plant survives under dim light, so no direct sunlight is required.
Another great plant for removing chemicals is the Dracaena deremensis, which is among the best plants to maintain. These can go anywhere because they can thrive with very little light, so a corner in your office on your desk next to the computer would work, ideally by a window. If there isn’t a window it’s okay, as long as there is a small light source.
Place these beautiful plants in a nice ceramic planter that adds to their character, this will make all the rooms in your house look as great as you feel!
