Blog - 6 Surprisingly Simple Fall Leaf Crafts
Hello, autumn! The leaves have been turning beautiful colors lately, haven’t they?
When the leaves fall to the ground, don’t let those pretty little things go to waste. We’ve got six simple fall leaf crafts for the young and the young at heart.
Before we get into the crafts, first a quick note on preserving leaves. Choose leaves that are flat (not curled) and already dry. Then press the leaves by placing them between two sheets of newspaper and covering with a heavy stack of books. This process will make them easier to work with.
Falling Leaves Mobile
Mimic the falling of leaves with a craft mobile. Purchase an embroidery frame from the craft store to serve as your base. Then tie the leaves to the frame, using thin elastic jewelry wire or an off-white thread. Add small pine cones or some other natural trinket to the ends of the strings of leaves. Next, wrap the frame with twine and add criss-cross straps for easy hanging.
Pretty Painted Leaves
Embrace the change in weather with a carefree, artistic activity: just grab some leaves and paint them. You can use doodle pens, metallic paint colors…whatever you have on hand. Once fully dry, place the painted leaves on coffee tables or end tables around your home, or use them as materials for one of these other projects.
Clothespin Fall Leaf Fairies
These fall leaf fairies are way too cute! While you can definitely use sturdy natural leaves, a base of plastic, foam or felt leaves from the craft store is recommended if you want a little more longevity—especially if you want the fairies to last past one play session. Use paint pens to draw the dresses, shoes and faces and embellish with crown stickers or any other jewels that you have.
Fall Leaf Crown
This craft doesn’t require that you dry or press the leaves. In fact, doing so could make the leaves a little too brittle. Instead, use freshly fallen maple leaves. Surprisingly, this crown is made with nothing but maple leaves woven together. You fold them in half and weave the stems to create the base. If you don’t have supple maple leaves, you could create a base with crafter’s wire and adorn it with leaves as you see fit.
Festive Fall Leaf Backdrop
What a gorgeous way to decorate for fall! This craft forms the perfect backdrop for a Thanksgiving serving area, or any other festive fall gathering. Choose a variety of leaf colors to get the most dramatic effect. Then find a twig with an interesting shape, and attach the leaf streamers to it with twine, wire, or thread.
DIY Fall Leaf Wreath
To recreate this fall leaf wreath, you’ll need a copper wire wreath base. Glue your chosen leaves on with PVA or a quality crafting glue (using quarters to keep the leaves in place while the glue dries). Hang the finished product near a window, and enjoy the effect of the sun glistening through the leaves.
Fall is certainly an exciting time. With the weather getting colder, we’re looking forward to time spent indoors with family and friends, a good book, and maybe some hot cocoa. Welcome in the new season with a fun, simple craft that helps you enjoy the beauty of fall.
